Meister Eckhart
Rhineland mysticism · the Dominican Order · Sermons · Counsels of Discernment
The boldest voice of the Christian West. He speaks of God so directly that Advaita Vedanta recognizes its own in him.
The essence of the teaching: The highest reality is not a person but the nameless Ground of being, and it is one with the deepest essence of your soul. God is born in that depth when you step out of yourself.
Transmission
Eckhart taught of the eternal birth of God in the depth of the soul. There is a place in you that no image, no time, no created thing has ever entered – he called it the spark, the ground of the soul. And this ground is one with the ground of God: they are not two, but one. For God to be born there, one thing is needed – detachment. Make room. Stop clinging to things, to yourself, even to your notions of God. "I pray God to rid me of God" – that is, of every image of God, so as to meet Him as He truly is. Where you are utterly empty, there God is utterly full.
