Breathing practices are safe for most people and have been used for thousands of years. But there are conditions in which any change to your breathing calls for a doctor's supervision.
Consult a doctor before you begin if you have:
- Cardiovascular conditions (hypertension, arrhythmia, coronary disease, heart failure)
- Chronic lung conditions (asthma, COPD, bronchitis in an acute phase)
- Epilepsy or seizure disorders
- Recent injuries or surgery (especially of the chest, abdomen or head)
- Pregnancy (especially the first and third trimesters)
- Acute mental-health conditions (panic disorder, PTSD, psychosis)
- Glaucoma or retinal detachment
Techniques with breath retention and hyperventilation (kapalabhati, holotropic, Wim Hof) are not recommended with these conditions. If you're unsure – start with gentle practices (4-7-8, coherent breathing) or consult a doctor.
