Hakuin Ekaku
Rinzai Zen · reviver · Orategama · Yasenkanna
The one who revived the koan and healed burnout with warm butter on the crown of the head.
The essence of the teaching: True nature is already here, and all beings are originally Buddhas. But exhaustion and illness arise from stagnant energy: they are cured by sinking the ki into the belly and the soles of the feet. Zen is not an escape into emptiness, but a living body filled with vital force.
Transmission
Hakuin drove himself with harsh practice into "Zen sickness" – a nervous exhaustion in which heat rose into his head and chest. A hermit taught him a simple image: imagine on the crown of your head a lump of soft, fragrant butter the size of a duck's egg. It melts slowly and flows down in a warm stream – through every organ, muscle, and bone, all the way to the soles of the feet, carrying away all the heat and unease. So he healed himself and lived a long life, reviving the rigorous path of the koan for thousands of students. He taught: do not be content with quiet peace, break the great doubt all the way through. But remember the body too – a mind without rooted energy flares up and goes out.
