Moses de León
Spanish Kabbalah · the circle of the Zohar · the Zohar · the Book of Radiance
The one through whom the central book of Kabbalah came into the world – a radiance that lit all that came after.
The essence of the teaching: Behind the letters of Scripture lies a second, hidden meaning. The world is a garment of the Infinite: all that you see at once conceals and reveals the hidden light. To read deeply is to see God behind things.
Transmission
In the thirteenth century, in Castile, Moses de León brought forth the Zohar – a vast mystical commentary on the Torah, ascribed to an ancient sage. Its power lies not in its authorship but in its vision: the Torah, says the Zohar, is like a beautiful maiden in a tower, who unveils her face only to the one who loves her. Every word has a body and has a soul. The one who sees only the body is a fool; the one who beholds the soul of the word sees the light hidden within creation. The Infinite fills all and clothes itself in the world as in a garment. There is no place empty of it. And so every thing, seen deeply, is a door.
