Hafiz

Persian Sufism · the path of love · Divan · ghazals

The drunken poet of Shiraz, whose verses shatter the ego's defences and call you to trade safety for the freedom of love.

The essence of the teaching: True knowledge of God lies not in amassing learning, but in ceasing to do harm – to yourself and to others. It is reached through silence, surrender, and the recognition of a love that was always there.

Transmission

Hafiz said: the sign that you have known God is that you drop the knife. That knife of the ego, which wounds both you and others with its judgement and its spite. Drink the wine of union – not from the vine, but from the presence of the Beloved, and it will wash away your grief. Become a humble stone, become dust – set aside the importance of your own "I" that blocks the light. Silence is the pilgrimage: grow still enough to hear the music the soul has always been singing. You are full of light before the sun has even risen – the joy comes before its cause.
