Patanjali

Raja Yoga · root of the tradition · The Yoga Sutras

The one who drew all of yoga into a thread of short lines – a map from the first step to union.

The essence of the teaching: Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. The two wings of the path are abhyasa and vairagya: steady practice and freedom from craving. So the mind is purified and comes to samadhi.

Transmission

Patanjali left no account of himself – only the sutras, dense as seeds. He named the obstacles of the path plainly: sickness, doubt, sloth, the scattering of the mind. And he gave the remedy: one-pointed attention, held again and again. Practice – abhyasa – is fidelity to one movement over years; detachment – vairagya – is peace toward fruits and promises. Between them the mind ceases to be disturbed, and then, he says, the seer abides in his own true nature. Not somewhere after death – here, when the water of the mind grows still.
